MMP-3 Inhibitor VIII is a cell permeable p-methoxysulfonamido D-leucine-containing hydroxamate compound. This compound functions as a potent inhibitor of human MMP-3 and murine macrophage metalloelastase MME/MMP-12. Studies indicate that MMP-3 Inhibitor VIII binds to the active site of MMP-3. MMP-3 is a protein which is involved in the breakdown of the extracellular matrix. These proteins are secreted as proproteins, which are activated via cleavage by proteinases.
