Mizoribine is an imidazole nucleoside immunosuppressant agent that was first isolated from the mold Eupenicillium brefeldimium with antibiotic and cytotoxic effects. In a mouse model for IgA nephropathy, Mizoribine was documented to influence the proliferation of B cells and decrease the glomerular IgA load while increasing glomerular expansion. In addition in human B cells the compound has been observed to Inhibit the expression of cyclin A. The immunosuppressive effects of Mizoribine Hydrobromide also effects T cells through suppression of G to S phase transition. In the case of puromycin aminonucleoside nephropathy Mizoribine demonstrated the ability to prevent podocyte injury. The compound has also been documented to induce the differentiation of promyelocytes on a mechansim relying on impaired guanine nucleotide synthesis. It belongs to the class of purine analogues and acts as an immunosuppressant.
