Mitragynine is a naturally occurring alkaloid found in the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree, known as kratom. Mitragynine is the primary active compound in kratom and is responsible for its psychoactive effects. Mitragynine interacts with opioid receptors in the brain, producing analgesic (pain-relieving) and sedative effects. It can also stimulate the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine, contributing to its mood-enhancing and energizing properties. Mitragynine has raised concerns due to potential health risks and addictive properties.
