Mineral oil is a mixture of alkanes that is suitable for overlaying aqueous reactions and centrifuge gradients. Mineral oil is a synthetic liquid utilized as a lubricant in various applications such as paints, varnishes, and other products. In aerosol lubricants and dispensing methods, mineral oil is the preferred choice as a lubricant. Specifically, it is used in aerosol containers alongside a propellant and highly hydrogenated mineral oil to lubricate gaskets in pipe segments. Derived from petroleum through distillation and purification, mineral oil undergoes decomposition into diverse hydrocarbons and polymers, which possess cationic surfactant properties, when subjected to heat. Furthermore, mineral oil exhibits the ability to impede the activity of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in vitro, potentially through its capacity to inhibit DNA synthesis.
