Methyl trans-4-bromo-2-butenoate, or methyl 4-bromocrotonate (MBC) is an organic compound belonging to the class of alkyl halides. It is an alkylating agent and can react with carboxylic acids to form esters for a variety of organic synthesis reactions. It has been used in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds, such as pyridines, furans, thiophenes, and thiazoles, as well as polymers and other materials. Methyl trans-4-bromo-2-butenoate may act to have an inhibitory effect on the enzymes cytochrome P450 and acetylcholinesterase. This suggests that it may have a role in modulating metabolism and neurotransmission.
