Methyl 4,4-dimethoxy-3-oxovalerate is a derivative of the naturally-occurring amino acid valine. It has been used to study the structure-activity relationship of valine derivatives, and as a model compound to study the effects of methylation on the physical and chemical properties of the molecule, enzyme activity, and the stability of the molecule in different environments. Methyl 4,4-dimethoxy-3-oxovalerate act as an inhibitor of the enzyme valine aminotransferase, which is involved in the metabolism of valine. Additionally, it may act to decrease the activity of certain enzymes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates.
