Mesembrine is an alkaloid found in the plant S. tortuosum, notable for its ability to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, a key neurotransmitter. It exhibits a strong affinity for the serotonin transporter (SERT), with significantly less interaction with other receptors. This compound has been observed to block serotonin reuptake effectively in laboratory environments. In certain studies, mesembrine was shown to produce analgesic effects. Additionally, mesembrine has been found to mildly inhibit phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), an enzyme. Its presence in Sceletium tortuosum, known as kanna, is suggested to be a contributing factor to some of the plant′s potential properties observed in research applications.
