Mepenzolate bromide is a quaternary ammonium compound that functions as a muscarinic receptor antagonist. It exerts its mechanism of action by competitively inhibiting the binding of acetylcholine to muscarinic receptors in smooth muscle, thereby blocking the downstream signaling cascade. This results in the relaxation of smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract and other organs, leading to decreased gastrointestinal motility and secretions. At the molecular level, mepenzolate bromide targets and blocks the M1 and M3 subtypes of muscarinic receptors, which are predominantly expressed in smooth muscle and exocrine glands. By interfering with the cholinergic signaling pathway, mepenzolate bromide effectively modulates smooth muscle tone and secretory activity, making it useful in investigating the physiological and pathophysiological roles of muscarinic receptors in various experiment.
