Melphalan, also known as L-Phenylalanine mustard, is an alkylating agent with anticancer affects in vitro. Functioning as a bifunctional alkylating agent, Melphalan possesses two reactive groups that form covalent bonds with DNA, leading to DNA damage. Melphalan, a phenylamine derivative of mechlorethamine, exerts its effect by alkylating DNA through covalent bonding with the nitrogenous bases. Consequently, this bond induces DNA damage, ultimately leading to cell death. Animal models have utilized Melphalan to explore the effects of chemotherapy on cancer cells. Laboratory studies have employed Melphalan to investigate its impact on cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, apoptosis, and DNA repair pathways in cancer cells subjected to chemotherapy. Such cell lines include myeloma, ovarian cancer, and breast cancer cells.
