Mdivi-1 is a selective cell-permeable inhibitor of mitochondrial division DRP1 (dynamin-related GTPase) and mitochondrial division dynamin I (Dnm1). Division and mitochondrial fusion play important roles in the regulation of apoptosis. By inhibiting Drp1, Mdivi-1 effectively reduces mitochondrial division, leading to changes in mitochondrial morphology and function that can influence cellular metabolism, apoptosis, and differentiation processes. Mdivi-1 is the first selective inhibitor of mitochondrial division dynamins. In models of neurodegenerative diseases where mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark, Mdivi-1 may act to protect against neuronal cell death by preserving mitochondrial function.
