Malvidin chloride is an antioxidant flavonoid which induces cell cycle arrest in the G2/M-phase. It functions as an inhibitor of 3′,5′-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) PDE (phosphodiesterases), as well as certain cGMP-specific PDEs. Malvidin chloride has been identified as a biologically active plant pigment.

Additionally, animal studies conducted on langur monkeys suggest that malvidin chloride has an anti-spermatogenic effect. It appears to induce atrophy in Leydig cells, as well as shrinkage of seminiferous tubules.
