Magnesium nitrate hexahydrate is a hygroscopic salt which in air quickly turns into the hexahydrate form. The compound has been employed in the concentration of nitric acid through heating magnesium nitrate hexahydrate yielding magnesium oxide, oxygen, and nitrogen oxides. The absorption of these nitrogen oxides in water is one possible way to synthesize nitric acid. Although the compound is inefficient, it does not require the use of another strong acid. Magnesium nitrate hexahydrate has also been used to detect Selenium (sc-250973) in blood.
