Maduramicin is a polyether ionophore antibiotic that functions as a coccidiostat in poultry production. It acts by disrupting the transmembrane ion gradients in the mitochondria of coccidia, leading to the collapse of the mitochondrial membrane potential and subsequent cell death. This disruption of ion gradients inhibits ATP synthesis and impairs the function of the electron transport chain, ultimately leading to the death of the coccidia. Maduramicin targets the coccidia and has a narrow spectrum of activity, making it effective against a variety of coccidia species. Its mechanism of action involves binding to and transporting specific ions across the cell membrane, disrupting the normal physiological processes of the coccidia. This disruption ultimately leads to the death of the parasites, making maduramicin an effective for controlling coccidiosis in poultry production.
