Levofloxacin Hemihydrate is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic against gram-negative organisms. It is also a stereoisomer of ofloxacin (sc-219475). Levofloxacin Hemihydrate works by inhibiting DNA gyrase (or topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV. DNA gyrase is essential for bacterial DNA replication, repair, and recombination, while topoisomerase IV plays a key role in partitioning the bacterial chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division. By inhibiting these enzymes, Levofloxacin Hemihydrate interferes with the bacteria′s ability to replicate and repair its DNA, leading to bacterial death.
