Lactose, a disaccharide sugar comprising one galactose and one glucose molecule, is predominantly found in milk and dairy products and holds significant importance in human nutrition. Scientific research extensively exploits lactose due to its applicability both in vivo (within living organisms) and in vitro (in laboratory environments). Lactose gets absorbed by the small intestine, breaking down into glucose and galactose with the help of the enzyme lactase.
