L-Quisqualic acid acts as an agonist for mGluR-1 (metabotropic glutamate receptor 1), and can be used to differentiate between mGluR-1 and mGluR-4. It has been reported to induce a slow K(+)-current response in B6 neurons of Aplysia buccal ganglia. It may act to inhibit human PSM (glutamate carboxypeptidase II, GCPII), an enzyme of the central nervous system and the human prostate. It has also been shown to increase the release of acetylcholine from the rat hippocampus and striatum. L-Quisqualic acid is an activator of GluR.
