L-Kynurenine is an amino acid that occurs naturally in both plants and animals. It plays a role as an intermediate in the breakdown pathway of tryptophan, an essential amino acid, and contributes to the synthesis of important neurotransmitters like serotonin and melatonin. Although the precise mechanism of action of L-Kynurenine is not fully elucidated, it is believed to interact with different receptors, such as NMDA receptors, serotonin receptors, and dopamine receptors. Moreover, L-Kynurenine has been observed to modulate the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. It serves as a substrate for enzymes like kynureninase, KMO, and KAT, which are associated with the suppression of antitumor immune responses. Notably, L-Kynurenine has been found to inhibit the proliferation of allogeneic T-cells and promote the invasion of malignant U87 glioma cells into a collagen matrix. In vitro studies involving diverse cell culture systems, including primary neuronal cells, astrocytes, and microglia, have provided valuable insights into L-Kynurenine. These studies have demonstrated that L-Kynurenine possesses anti-inflammatory properties and promotes neuronal survival.
