L-Glutamine alpha-amide hydrochloride is a synthetic derivative of the naturally occurring amino acid, L-serine. It is used in a wide range of laboratory experiments, including those in the fields of biochemistry and physiology. For example, it is employed in studies of enzyme kinetics, protein structure and function, and the regulation of gene expression. L-Glutamine alpha-amide hydrochloride acts as an inhibitor of the enzyme acyl-CoA synthetase, which is involved in the synthesis of fatty acids from acyl-CoA. This prevents the formation of fatty acids and thus affects the production of energy in the cell. The compound has also been shown to increase the production of certain proteins, such as those involved in the regulation of gene expression.
