L-Glutamic acid γ-(p-nitroanilide) hydrochloride is a derivative of L-glutamine and a major component of the polyamine biosynthesis pathway. It acts as a substrate for GGT (gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase). GGT plays a role in glutathione metabolism, which is vital for protecting cells against oxidative stress. L-Glutamic acid γ-(p-nitroanilide) hydrochloride also inhibits ornithine decarboxylase, which leads to a decrease in the synthesis of polyamines, which in turn leads to a decrease in the expression of genes and proteins involved in cell cycle regulation. Additionally, the compound has been used to study the effects of polyamines on the expression of the protein cyclin-dependent kinase 2, which is involved in cell cycle regulation. Furthermore, it has been reported to have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-proliferative effects.
