QUICK LINKS

L-Buthionine sulfoximine (BSO) is a glutathione-synthesis inhibitor that activates oxidative stress through irreversibly inhibiting gamma-GCSc (gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase). Studies show methylglyoxal (MG) activated caspase-3 is enhanced in the presence of L-Buthionine sulfoximine. It has been reported that L-Buthionine sulfoximine can augment HIV-1 activation through class I HDACIs, and that it can sensitize human breast cancer cells that are anti-hormone resistant to estrogen-induced apoptosis.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FaundezFaundez, et. al. (PubMed ID 18332173) found that by treating Trypanosoma cruzi infected mice with L-Buthionine sulfoximine (BSO) at a dose of 220mg/kg of body weight per day, the survival rate improved and the parasitemias and parasite burden on the heart was decreased. -SCBT Publication Review
