L-Arginine, a semi-essential amino acid, holds a significant place in human physiology. While it can be produced by the body, certain circumstances may necessitate its inclusion in the diet. This amino acid can be found abundantly in various foods like red meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, nuts, and legumes. As a dietary supplement, L-Arginine is often sought after for its potential health advantages, including improved exercise performance, increased muscle mass, and enhanced immune function. L-Arginine plays a vital role in numerous metabolic pathways, such as the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO), urea cycle, and protein synthesis. Notably, the production of nitric oxide facilitates insulin-mediated glucose uptake by promoting blood flow. Furthermore, L-Arginine influences cell growth, differentiation, and immune responses. In the human body, L-Arginine synthesis occurs through the actions of argininosuccinate synthetase and argininosuccinate lyase, which convert citrulline to arginine. L-Arginine is then utilized in the urea cycle to form urea and ammonia, and is also involved in the regulation of various physiological processes, including neurotransmission, platelet aggregation, and vasodilation. In vitro studies have predominantly focused on investigating L-Arginine′s effects on protein synthesis, urea cycle, and arginine synthesis. Additionally, it has been used in cell culture studies to evaluate its impact on apoptosis, cell differentiation, and growth.
