Kanamycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside-antibiotic with broad antibacterial spectrum, including mycobacteria, many gram-positive and most gram-negative organisms. It binds to ribosomal components and inhibits protein synthesis. Kanamycin is inactivated by an aminoglycoside phospho transferase (MW 25,000) in the periplasmic space. It is a selectable marker for cosmid vectors used in transfection of mammalian cells.
