Kanamycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. The antibiotic spectrum of Kanamycin encompasses both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, targeting pathogens like Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In laboratory experiments, it serves to select bacterial mutants and investigate gene expression and regulation mechanisms. It contributes to the investigation of bacterial physiology, encompassing protein synthesis regulation and the impact of antibiotics on bacterial metabolism. It also finds utility in investigating gene expression and regulation in mammalian cells, as well as assessing the effects of antibiotics on cells. Kanamycin impedes protein production within bacterial cells. By binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, it obstructs the formation of a functional 70S ribosome. Consequently, bacterial protein synthesis is disrupted, leading to the inhibition of bacterial growth.
