Kadethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid ester insecticide and an agrochemical, belonging to the furans and tetrahydrothiophenes family. Its origin is traced back to (−)-cis-chrysanthemic acid. The mechanism by which synthetic pyrethroids like Kadethrin work is by delaying the closure of sodium channels. This results in a slow influx of sodium during the end of depolarization, in which the pyrethroid molecule keeps the activation gate open. Pyrethroids with an alpha-cyano group, such as fenvalerate, lead to more prolonged sodium tail currents than other pyrethroids, like permethrin or bioresmethrin, causing more cutaneous sensations. But, interaction with sodium channels isn′t the only proposed mechanism of action for pyrethroids. Their effects on the central nervous system (CNS) have led to suggestions of other actions, including antagonism of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated inhibition, modulation of nicotinic cholinergic transmission, enhancement of noradrenaline release, or actions on calcium ions. However, since neurotransmitter-specific pharmacological agents provide only limited protection against poisoning, it′s unlikely that one of these effects represents the primary mechanism of action of pyrethroids, and most neurotransmitter release is secondary to increased sodium entry.
