JC-1 is used to determine mitochondrial membrane potential. JC-1 iodide is a cationic carbocyanine dye that is membrane permeable and is often used for flow cytometry and fluorescent microscopy. JC-1 iodide changes color as the membrane potential increases. At higher potentials, JC-1 iodide forms aggregates, which changes the fluorescence emission color from green to red. JC-1 iodide is also known as CBIC2(3), 5,6-dichloro-2-[3-(5,6-dichloro-1,3-diethyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimidazol-2-ylidene)-1-propen-1-yl]-1,3-diethyl-1H-benzimidazolium, monoiodide, and 5,5′,6,6′-Tetrachloro-1,1′,3,3′-tetraethylbenzimidazolylcarbocyanine iodide.
