Itaconic acid (IA) is a naturally occurring organic acid produced by various microorganisms, such as fungi and bacteria. This versatile compound finds significant utility in industrial applications, serving as a key component in the production of polymers, polyesters, polyamides, and polyurethanes. Although the precise mechanism of action remains unclear, studies suggest several possibilities. Itaconic acid may disrupt the cell membrane of bacteria, impeding their growth and survival. Additionally, it has been proposed that IA inhibits the production of specific enzymes, further impacting microbial activity.
