Isoxsuprine hydrochloride is a smooth muscle relaxant. It acts by directly stimulating beta-adrenergic receptors, leading to an increase in intracellular cyclic AMP levels. This results in the relaxation of smooth muscles in the peripheral vasculature, particularly in the arteries and arterioles. By causing vasodilation, isoxsuprine hydrochloride can increase blood flow to certain tissues and organs. It may inhibit platelet aggregation, which may further contribute to its vasodilatory effects. At the molecular level, isoxsuprine hydrochloride exerts its action by binding to and activating beta-adrenergic receptors on smooth muscle cells, leading to the activation of adenylate cyclase and subsequent increase in cyclic AMP levels. This cascade of events ultimately leads to the relaxation of smooth muscle cells and vasodilation.
