Isosorbide Mononitrate is a chemical compound that functions as a vasodilator in experimental applications. This activation leads to an increase in the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) within smooth muscle cells. The elevated levels of cGMP cause relaxation of the smooth muscle, leading to vasodilation and a decrease in blood pressure. Isosorbide Mononitrate targets the venous system, reducing the preload on the heart and decreasing the oxygen demand of the myocardium. Isosorbide Mononitrate′s mechanism of action involves its ability to directly affect the smooth muscle cells in blood vessels, leading to their relaxation and subsequent vasodilation.
