Iron(III) p-toluenesulfonate hexahydrate (ITS) is a highly soluble inorganic compound that has a wide range of applications in the scientific and industrial fields. In particular, it has been used extensively in the laboratory for the synthesis of organic compounds, as a catalyst in organic reactions, and as a reagent in biochemical and physiological studies. Moreover, Iron(III) p-toluenesulfonate hexahydrate is employed in the preparation of lipids, proteins, and other biological molecules. It can also be used in the analysis of metals, such as iron, and in the determination of the structure of complex molecules. In studies of isolated enzymes, Iron(III) p-toluenesulfonate hexahydrate may act to increase the activity of some enzymes, while decreasing the activity of others. Furthermore, it inhibits the growth of certain bacteria and fungi. Additionally, it can increase the solubility of certain proteins and lipids, as well as to increase the stability of certain proteins.
