Iodoacetic acid is a reagent for the modification and alkylation of cysteine residues in proteins. It has also been used in glycopeptide synthesis. Iodoacetic acid is a compound found in colorless or white crystal form. It belongs to the haloacetic acid family and is derived from acetic acid by replacing one of the hydrogens in the methyl group with an iodine atom. This substitution gives it the properties of an alkylating agent. Iodoacetic acid is classified as an organoiodine compound and a haloacetic acid.
