QUICK LINKS

Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), prominently exists as a constituent of diesel exhaust and pervades the environment as a consequence of fossil fuel combustion. This compound is recognized as one of the most hazardous PAHs, warranting its classification as a human carcinogen. The mechanism by which Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene operates is not yet comprehensively elucidated. However, current knowledge suggests its interaction with DNA, leading to genetic mutations. It is postulated that the compound binds to DNA, thereby inducing mutations in the genetic code. Additionally, Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene has demonstrated its ability to induce oxidative damage to cells, culminating in cell death.
