Iberotoxin is a highly selective and potent blocker of the MaxiK (high conductance Ca2+ activated K+ channels) that does not affect other types of voltage-dependent K+ channels. Because of iberiotoxin′s strong ability to block Ca2+ activated K+ channels, in mammalian motor nerve terminals the compound can induce dihydropyridine sensitive release of ACh. In rat organotypic dorsal striatal slices iberiotoxin and margatoxin (sc-358754) were both observed to induce production of c-fos like mRNA and protein. Iberiotoxin is an inhibitor of MaxiKalpha.
