Hordenine has antibacterial and antibiotic properties. When the the affects of Hordenine on melanogenesis and its mechanisms of action in epidermal melanocytes was studied, Hordenine was found to significantly inhibit Melanin content. It was also found to reduce the intracellular cAMP levels, as well as, inhibit the expression of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF). When the quorum sensing (QS)-mediated pathogenicity of Horedenine was studied, Hordenin was used to downregulate the expressions of QS- and biofilm-related genes in the tomato- S. marcescens host-pathogen system. Hordenine is released from barley malt during mashing and has recently been identified as a functionally selective dopamine D2 receptor (D2DR) agonist. Related products include Hordenine Sulfate Dihydrate (sc-295161).
