Holomycin is a member of the pyrrothine class of antibiotics and displays broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. It works by binding to DNA and inhibiting the activity of topoisomerase, an enzyme involved in the unwinding of DNA. It also binds to the ribosomal subunit and inhibits protein synthesis. Moreover, it inhibits the activity of other cellular components, such as the cytoplasmic membrane. In addition, it may act to induce apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in certain cell types. Holomycin has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and protozoa.
