Herbimycin A is a benzoquinoid ansamycin that functions as a heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) inhibitor. In research, it is utilized to examine the role of Hsp90 in protein folding and stability, as Hsp90 is in maintaining the functional conformation of a wide range of client proteins, many of which are involved in signal transduction pathways. By inhibiting Hsp90, herbimycin A can induce the degradation of these client proteins, which includes various kinases and steroid receptors. This property makes it an important tool in studying the cellular response to compromised protein homeostasis and the mechanisms governing protein turnover. Furthermore, research applications of herbimycin A extend to the study of its effects on cell proliferation and survival, as well as its potential to induce the expression of other heat shock proteins.
