HCTU is an organophosphorus compound extensively utilized as a reagent in the synthesis of various organic molecules, including peptides and nucleic acids. Additionally, it has proven instrumental in the synthesis of small organic molecules like dyes and fluorescent probes. This colorless, crystalline solid remains stable under standard storage conditions and exhibits solubility in polar organic solvents like dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and dimethylformamide (DMF). The exact mechanism of action of HCTU is not entirely elucidated however, it is believed to involve the formation of a covalent bond between the phosphate group of HCTU and the substrate molecule. This covalent bond is subsequently cleaved by a base, such as sodium hydroxide, resulting in the release of the desired product.
