Glyceryl trioctanoate (tricaprylin) is a triglyceride of octanoic acid esters and a non-ionic surfactant. In vivo scientific research applications include the use of Glyceryl trioctanoate as a surfactant to improve drug delivery, an emulsifier in food products, and an emollient in cosmetics. In vitro applications use it as a substrate for various biochemical and physiological studies, a solvent for various chemical reactions, and a lubricant for laboratory equipment. It may act to increase the permeability of cell membranes, the solubility of lipids, and the activity of certain enzymes. Additionally, Glyceryl trioctanoate possesses anti-microbial activity.
