Gitoxigenin is a 16beta-substituted digitoxigenin which may act as a Na+/K+-ATPase inhibitor. It is a naturally occurring diterpenoid compound found in a variety of plant species. It has been used as an inhibitor of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), which is involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxanes. Gitoxigenin has also been studied for its potential anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-bacterial properties. Furthermore, it has demonstrated protective effects against oxidative stress and to improve cognitive function in animal models.
