QUICK LINKS

Ghrelin (human) is an endogenous agonist peptide for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R) and is mainly produced in the stomach. The GHS-R potently stimulates growth hormone release from the pituitary gland in vitro. Ghrelin (human) is an activator of GHS-R1a. The structure of ghrelin includes a notable post-translational modification: the serine residue at the third position is acylated with an octanoic acid. This acylation is essential for its biological activity, particularly its ability to bind to the GHS-R. Upon binding to its receptor, ghrelin promotes fat storage and stimulates the release of growth hormone.
