QUICK LINKS

Gestodene is a progestogen that functions as a progestin. It acts by binding to and activating the progesterone receptor, leading to the suppression of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) release from the pituitary gland. This, in turn, inhibits ovulation and prevents the development of the endometrium, creating an unfavorable environment for implantation. Gestodene also thickens the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to penetrate the uterus. At the molecular level, gestodene modulates gene transcription, leading to changes in the endometrial lining and cervical mucus.
