Ganciclovir-d5 is an antiviral, labelled Ganciclovir. Ganciclovir itself is a synthetic analogue of 2′-deoxy-guanosine, which inhibits viral DNA replication by competitively inhibiting viral DNA polymerases and by incorporation into viral DNA, leading to premature chain termination. It is especially effective against cytomegalovirus (CMV), a herpes virus. The introduction of deuterium into ganciclovir to produce Ganciclovir-d5 offers several advantages in research applications. Deuterium bonds are stronger than hydrogen bonds, which can reduce the rate of metabolic degradation of the molecule. Ganciclovir-d5 can be used as an internal standard in mass spectrometry-based analyses, improving the accuracy and reliability of quantifying ganciclovir concentrations in biological samples.
