Ga(III) Protoporphyrin IX Chloride, also known as GaPP, is a gallium protoporphyrin. It is a synthetic derivative of heme, a naturally occurring molecule found in hemoglobin and other hemoproteins. It is considered a competitive inhibitor of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), an enzyme responsible for the breakdown of heme. By inhibiting HO-1, Ga(III) Protoporphyrin IX Chloride can modulate the cellular levels of heme and its breakdown products, leading to various biological effects. For example, inhibition of HO-1 by Ga(III) Protoporphyrin IX Chloride can induce oxidative stress and promote apoptosis in cancer cells.
