Fumitremorgin C (FTC) is a diketopiperazine, fungal toxin, that acts as a strong and specific ABCG2/BRCP (ATP-binding cassette G2/breast cancer resistance protein) inhibitor. Studies indicate that Fumitremorgin C inhibits cell cycle progression in the M phase of tsFT210 mouse cells. Isolated from Aspergillus fumigatus, Fumitremorgin C has been proved to revert resistance to topotecan, mitoxanthrone, doxorubicin, in S1-M1–3.2 cells that over express BRCP/ABCG2 mRNA. Reports suggest that Fumitremorgin C inhibits BRCP/ABCG2-mediated transport, which results in the re-sensitization of drug-resistant cells. Fumitremorgin Cs neurotoxicity has lead researchers to investigate analogues of Fumitremorgin C, such as Ko143.
