Fluoroacetamide presents itself as a colorless crystalline powder and serves as a rodenticide. This compound exhibits high toxicity. Specifically, Fluoroacetamide refers to acetamide with a fluorine atom substitution at position C-2. The toxic mechanism of fluoroacetate involves the inhibition of the citric acid cycle. The fluorine-substituted acetate is incorporated, behaving like a regular acetate, into fluorocitrate coenzyme A. This coenzyme then combines with oxaloacetate, forming fluorocitrate. Fluorocitrate hinders the enzyme aconitase, thereby impeding the conversion of citrate to isocitrate. Consequently, there is an accumulation of substantial amounts of citrate in the tissues, leading to cycle blockage. Notably, poisoning resulting from general oxidative energy metabolism inhibition critically affects the heart and central nervous system (CNS).
