Fluorescent Brightener 28 belongs to the class of fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs). It is primarily used in various industries, including polyamide and cellulose fabrics, soaps, detergents, paper, plastics, and cosmetics, to enhance the brightness and whiteness of products. It works by absorbing ultraviolet (UV) light and emiting visible blue light, thereby increasing the perceived whiteness of materials. It functions by converting UV light into longer-wavelength visible light, compensating for any yellowing or dullness in the material′s appearance. This optical illusion creates an enhanced perception of whiteness and brightness to the human eye. Fluorescent Brightener 28 is also used as a viability stain for the staining of fungi.
