QUICK LINKS

Flucythrinate belongs to the class of synthetic pyrethroids, primarily used to control Heliothis spp. in cotton and other insect pests in agricultural crops. It is an organofluorine insecticide and an organofluorine acaricide. The synthetic pyrethroids delay closure of the sodium channel, resulting in a sodium tail current that is characterized by a slow influx of sodium during the end of depolarization. Their effects on the central nervous system have led various workers to suggest actions via antagonism of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated inhibition, modulation of nicotinic cholinergic transmission, enhancement of noradrenaline release, or actions on calcium ions. Pyrethroids also cause pronounced repetitive activity and a prolongation of the transient increase in sodium permeability of the nerve membrane in insects and other invertebrates.
