Fexofenadine HCl, a metabolite of terfenadine, has demonstrated to be a nonsedating Histamine H1 receptor antagonist. Mechanistic studies have reported that high concentrations of this compound can inhibit Cox-1 activity while low concentrations of Fexofenadine HCl inhibits Cox-2 activity. In one study, Fexofenadine HCl was found to inhibit the release of histamine, leukotrienes, and other inflammatory mediators. In another study, Fexofenadine HCl reduced the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
