Fenbutrazate is an anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, and appetite suppressing agent. Derived from phenmetrazine, it shares similarities with phendimetrazine and may function as a prodrug. In vitro studies have demonstrated its ability to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α and IL-1β. Fenbutrazate specifically targets the pathways associated with joint inflammation, while also inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) responsible for prostaglandin production, a key factor in inflammation.
