Etifoxine is a non-benzodiazepine modulator of GABAergic synaptic transmission described to produce anxiolytic effects. Etifoxine is demonstrated to potentiate GABAA receptor function in cultured neurons through interaction at the B subunit of the receptor, and is shown to evoke a chloride current in the absence of GABA (sc-203053) and to enhance GABA-activated currents.
