Etidronate disodium is a compound that functions as a bisphosphonate, inhibiting bone resorption by targeting osteoclast activity. It acts by binding to hydroxyapatite crystals in bone, interfering with their dissolution and preventing the release of calcium ions. This disruption of normal bone turnover leads to a decrease in bone resorption and an increase in bone mineral density. Etidronate disodium also has the ability to chelate with metal ions, such as calcium, and inhibit the formation of calcium phosphate crystals. This dual mechanism of action may be a useful for studying bone metabolism and mineralization processes in experimental models. Etidronate disodium interferes with the function of farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase, an enzyme involved in the mevalonate pathway, ultimately leading to the inhibition of protein prenylation and osteoclast function.
